Other Notes Please note the following:

  • This is a residential course, with extended teaching times into the evening to better prepare you to provide safe and competent care in the wilderness. As a result, there will not be extended “time-off” periods.
  • Morris Valley has poor-to-no cellphone service, and is not suitable for individuals who require continual access to cell service.
  • As a wilderness course, this course will take place indoors and outdoors — regardless of weather. Clothing for the conditions will be required.
  • The course is significantly scenario-based, which requires periods of hiking on uneven ground, roleplaying on uneven surfaces, and working at night. Although safety is at the forefront of our instructors, candidates should be physically comfortable in performing such activities.
  • We highly recommend a current Standard First Aid certificate, as the course is focused on applying basic first aid concepts into the wilderness setting — not all skills will be reviewed in depth. If it has been a while since your last course, you may want to consider reviewing the Canadian Red Cross Standard First Aid textbook (PDF link; 64 pages).
